Canadian Folk Dancing at HDES

folk dancing

At the end of April, the HDES second graders had a couple of combined music and physical education classes.  Mr. Viselli and Mrs. McGuire helped them to learn some Canadian folk dances.  They were all circle dances, working toward meeting the music learning targets of learning line or circle dances, moving to a beat, and remembering rhythmic movement patterns.  The learning targets specific to PE are locomotor movements of skipping and galloping, teamwork and direction following.  The 5-2-1-0 program that they studied in health classes also recommends one hour or more of physical activity per day.  Folk dancing is a wonderful way to combine music with physical activity for a healthy lifestyle.
