New Morning Walking and Running Program

Date Beginning:  Monday November 2, 2009-End of School Year

Time Held:  8:05-8:15

Location:  Hall-Dale Elementary School Gymnasium

Description:

Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a walking / running program each morning.  Research has shown that there are numerous health benefits associated with regular physical activity.  The same research shows that many children do not get adequate amounts of physical activity.  NASPE (the National Association of Sport and Physical Education) recommends that elementary aged students receive 150 minutes of physical education each week.  Since current levels of P.E. are 60 minutes for grades K-2 and 45 minutes for grades 3-5, this will be an opportunity for students to receive 50 more minutes of physical activity each week.
Students will be expected to wear sneakers, walk or run the entire activity time, and follow all established physical education rules.  Incentives will be provided based on attendance/participation for the first two weeks as a performance based reward system is established.  If your student is interested in participating, please sign and return this sheet to the main office.  Please contact Mr. Viselli (P.E. teacher) with questions or if you would like to help with this program.

Fitness Walking Trail at Hall-Dale Elementary (SNOWSHOEING!!!)

This year as part of my Master’s Degree I am working to create a Fitness Walking trail here at the elementary school.  This trail will be utilized by the P.E. program (hiking and snow shoeing), class rooms, teachers, and the entire community.  I have already received in kind donations for trail cutting and mapping. The Hall-Dale PTO has committed to donating $1000 for trail surfacing and a trail head sign.  Please visit this blog often to stay posted on trail and P.E. information.  If you are interested in donating (time or money), please contact Joe Viselli (jviselli@halldale.org).
Here is a map of the proposed trail.  The trail is marked and clearing has begun.

This winter Third and Fourth grade classes have been utilizing the trail during P.E. classes.  We have been out several times with snowshoes and have been learning about aerobic exercise (exercise with oxygen).  Classes have also been discussing the importance of layering their clothing during winter exercise to prevent overheating or getting chilled.  If you have snowshoes and are looking for a quick convenient place to go, come to Hall-Dale E.S. and follow the snowshoe tracks!

Fitness Testing

Here at Hall-Dale we use the fitnessgram fitness test as a district assessment.  I like the fitnessgram because it is scientifically based with age appropriate healthy fitness zones.  Unlike other fitness tests it does not emphasize competition, rather that it is done to get an accurate picture of the student’s health.  We have children peer assess their scores to promote traits such as honesty, integrity, and trustworthiness.  It also give the students more ownership in the process.  I fitness test my students three times a year, the cycle goes; October pretest, January practice, May/June post test.  We continually discuss and practice the test items and make sure that students understand why we do fitness testing, how to properly assess them, and what to do with the information.

Height / Weight
The only test that I administer personally is the body composition test that takes height / weight and converts it to a number on the Body Mass Index (BMI).  I do this because of the sensitivity issues surrounding a person’s height and weight.  I use a digital scale for their weight and a yardstick taped to the wall beginning at the three foot level.  Prior to weighing my students we discuss why we take our weight, and why people are different heights and weights.

Test Items:
PACER test
Shoulder stretch
Trunk raise
Push Up
Curl up

New Activities

The Great Wall of China
Objective:  To improve dodging skills, cardiovascular endurance.
Students try to move from one end line to the other.  On the center court line there is one or two students.  This student(s) is the “Emperor”, who must stay on the black center line.  Their job is to protect the “Great Wall” by tagging any student who tries to get by.  If a student is tagged by the Emperor, (s)he must join them on the Great Wall.  Once there are more than five students on the line, the Emperor chooses people from the Great Wall to start a new “village” on another line in the gym.  Now, if a student gets tagged by a villager, they must join them on the new line.

ACES Day

On May 7, students at Hall-Dale Elementary participated in ACES (all children exercising simultaneously) day.  Students from around the world took part in this event as a symbol of the importance of physical activity as it relates to a healthy lifestyle.  It was quite a site to see our whole student body on our athletic field participating in a circuit workout.  This was the first year we as a school have participated and hopefully we will continue to participate in the future.  I will be posting pictures of the event in the near future.

For more information about ACES visit:  http://www.maineinmotion.org/aces.asp
