This is a unit that uses the Sport Education curriculum model developed by Dr. Daryl Siedentop from the Ohio State University.
Since the 2005-2006 school year, the fifth graders have been participating in a floor hockey unit that runs for 6-8 weeks. Students are placed on teams which remain the same for the entire unit. Each player also has a role/job on the team. There are captains, equipment managers, trainers, and statisticians. The teams go through a preseason, regular season, and postseason with a culminating whole class tournament. Students learn about the culture of sport, teamwork, sportsmanship, and the value of good competition. Students also come up with their own team names and logos. This year the team names are:
Ms. Thayer’s 5th Grade
Team Big Bird, Pirates in Paradise, The Blue Bears, The Green Gladiators
Mrs. Wheelock’s 5th Grade
Lightning Bolts, Supersticks, Flaming Pucks, The Green Dragons
Pictures of the team logos will be uploaded soon!
