Dear Voter,
I am Dylan Sirois, and I am announcing my candidacy for Student Representative to the School Board. I feel it is very important for the student body stay informed about what is happening in the school, and to the school. The school board is in direct control over the school and all of its doings. It is essential that we, the students have a say in the running of our school. And, I will stay well connected with the student body and the school board, so that everyone has a chance to make a difference.
I have few reasons for wanting to run, but they are very important reasons to me. My first reason for running, would be the fact that I had no idea the post of Student Representative to the School Board existed, and don’t remember ever voting for anyone into this post. When elected I will make sure that anyone who wants to know what is going on in the School Board will easily be able access the information. I will send out a letter to every home room teacher once a month; reporting exactly what the school board is doing. I will also have a monthly meeting with any and all students, allowing you to voice your opinions and ideas, so that I may better represent the student body to the school board.
My second reason for running is also very important, and it deals with the standards based grading system. The standards based grading system, is a system that will replace the 1 to 100 point grading system. Grading instead on “does not meet the standard, partially meets the standard, meets the standard, and exceeds the standard.” I am against this grading system because it could limit chances that you will be able to get into top college. Much is unknown, about this new system, and the people developing it explain it differently from those who will be implementing it come September 2007. This system has been in the building stages for years, yet I heard about it one day in class from a teacher, not from my Student Representative to the School Board. I am strongly against this new system as we will be used as guinea pigs in the process. I feel that the students should have a say over this new system that will affect us more than anyone else.
With your help I believe that I will do a great job at this post. As I have said, I will keep the student body informed and work with the student governments to make this school a better place. I will also make myself available for ideas from the students.
Respectfully yours,
Dylan Sirois
