Maine For One Request:
I received a letter from a man named Brian Goff upon our return to school in January. He is the founder of a project called Maine For One, which works in conjunction with the One Campaign. This campaign, which was founded a few years ago by Bono from the band U2, is working towards making extreme poverty a thing of the past. It aims to give the millions already suffering access to food, water, shelter, and clothing. The campaign is all about debt relief and has proposed a plan that will allow third world countries to distribute the money being paid on interest alone, and use it towards necessities in life. The campaign is also working towards giving every child the right to an education, as well as giving women equal opportunities in life.
Brian Goff has spent much of his time during the last year promoting and gaining support for his campaign. His primary goal for the project at this point is the gain state-wide support. He has written Governor Baldacci a few times and recently requested that he declare a Maine for One Day to gain media attention and celebrate the cause that the One Campaign is working towards. He states that the One Campaign is urging our leaders to provide more aid to areas of need such as Africa and create programs that will allow these people to one day be able to take care of themselves.
He is not asking for money through this letter, but rather support. He proposed a couple of things we could do for the cause. Firstly, we could hold a Maine for One day at Hall-Dale. This would involve organizing it with our school administration and all class presidents. We could make posters and send out e-mails regarding the cause. Finally, we could have people sign our petition and visit www.one.org. He also urges us to write Governor Baldacci and let him know how we feel about the One campaign, as well as encourage him to declare a Maine for One day.
To sum it all up, Brian Goff wants us to get the word out to students and faculty, who will hopefully spread it to family and friends, who will spread it to others and so on. I know that something of this sort is more of an Amnesty Club project, but I felt I should inform the senate first, as it was addressed to us. I encourage any individuals to support this project through their own initiative if they feel compelled to and invite them to visit www.one.org.

Thank You,

Andy
