Wellness Committee minutes
November 1, 2007
4 to 6 pm, Hall-Dale Elementary School Library

Attending: Don Siviski, Michelle, Margaret, Judy Skehan, Betty, Laura Harper, Renee

Update on implementation of goals:

Page 5, #1 - Goals of the wellness policy will be met to the best of parents, teachers and students abilities when planning school or classroom parties, celebration or events.
Chris sent letter to ES parents, policy went home via students on first day.  A one-page memo will go out in December to remind parents of policy during holiday season.
Things improving, especially at Halloween events. 
Non-food items such temporary tattoos, pencils, etc.
Discussion of how to facilitate healthy changes in upper grades.  Don will communicate to Middle and High administrators to instruct staff to enforce policy with teachers.
Middle and High schools will remind parents/student of policy during holiday season in the newsletter or another appropriate venue.
Page 5, #2 - Parents will be encouraged to provide nutritionally sound snacks from home.
List of healthy snacks distributed at open house.
Page 5, #5 - Student organizations will be encouraged to engage in fundraising projects that are supportive of healthy eating and student wellness.  When students are the primary audience for the fundraiser, foods will comply with the wellness goal of offering only healthy foods for student consumption.
Carols and Dessert found in compliance as long as healthy options are offered.
Pie sale is not occurring this year.
Renee shared a great hand-out on non-food fundraisers.
Page 6, #8 - Food and beverages offered or sold at school-sponsored events (including athletic events, or performances) outside the school day will include healthy options.  When students are the primary audience for the event, foods will comply with the wellness goal of offering only healthy foods for student consumption.
Policy and Personnel Committee will articulate use of facility in compliance with wellness policy via form.
Reach out to Boosters and involve them via the Snack Shack in promoting wellness.
Laura will invite the Boosters to our next meeting.
Discuss with Boosters about water bottles.
The wellness committee recommends that an intramural program be instituted at the high school and possibly the middle school to increase physical activity and healthy lifestyles.
Policy and Personnel will be bringing intramural job description to the board in December.
Don will also follow up with Steve about getting Wellness Policy on Edline.  Committee will check that policy is available on Hall-Dale website.
New business
Sugar Out Day
In February, no sugar served in school cafeteria, education about sugar, etc.  Resources and discussion will be shared via email.
Put discussion on agenda for our January meeting.  Discuss possibility of a 5:2:1:0 focus.
Next meeting date, January 3rd, 4 to 6 pm, High School library.
