The District
Hall-Dale High School serves the students in Maine School Administrative District No. 16, which is made up of the communities of Hallowell and Farmingdale. This district also receives approximately thirty percent of its school population from adjacent communities.
Hallowell and Farmingdale are residential communities located four miles from the state capital, Augusta. Not surprisingly, many residents commute to Augusta to work in professional, managerial, and clerical positions related to the state and federal government. These communities proudly support many small independent businesses, ranging from agricultural operations to distinctive shops - all of which, in their own way, lend their appeal to the tourist trade.
The Curriculum
The Hall-Dale School System has taken an important step to raise the expectations for all students in our schools by articulating leaning results in eight content areas of instruction: information skills, language arts, mathematics, modern and classical languages, physical education and health, science, social studies, and visual and performing arts. These standards, benchmarks, and performance indicators are referred to as the MSAD #16 Framework for Academic Standards. They set reasonable and challenging targets and expectations for what teachers need to teach and students need to learn.
The curriculum and the methods of delivery at Hall-Dale High School have been modified and the structure of the school day changed to permit greater flexibility in instruction to meet the needs of all students. In many cases "tracking" has been modified or eliminated and the school has been blocked into 80 minute periods on a two-day rotating schedule.
Freshmen select courses from a core curriculum that includes heterogeneously grouped classes in English, social studies, science, and physical education/wellness, while mathematics offers a choice of levels beginning with pre-algebra. The sophomore, junior, and senior students are similarly mixed in groups for their core classes. Honor level courses in English, mathematics, and U. S. History are offered to students who meet the standards of the state-approved gifted and talented selection guidelines.
The curriculum is actively supported by a dynamic library media center which offers books, magazines, databases, AV, and computer technology. Proximity to the State Library and UMA allows an active research borrowing program.
The curriculum at Hall-Dale High School is supplemented with programs provided regionally by the Capitol Areas Technical Center and area high schools. These programs include regional gifted and talented programs, selected advanced placement courses, and classes that provide instruction in the vocational and technical fields.
